Mastering Self Reliance At Sea
In any emergency, whether you're venturing into the wilderness or preparing for unforeseen events at home, having a well-stocked grab bag (or bug-out bag) can be a lifesaver. This compact survival kit should include the essentials to keep you safe, warm, and nourished for at least 72 hours. Here’s everything you need to make sure your grab bag is ready for anything!
Why You Need It: Clean drinking water is the top priority in survival situations. The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter allows you to safely drink from almost any water source, filtering out 99.9999% of bacteria and parasites.
Recommended Product: LifeStraw Personal Water Filter
Why You Need It: Shelter is crucial for protection from the elements, especially in harsh environments. A lightweight, waterproof shelter keeps you warm and dry and can prevent hypothermia.
Recommended Product: Emergency Shelter Tent
Why You Need It: Staying warm at night is essential, as even mild exposure to cold can lead to dangerous conditions like hypothermia. Look for a compact, lightweight sleeping bag with thermal insulation.
Recommended Product: Military All Weather Sleeping Bag
Why You Need It: Darkness can make even simple tasks difficult. A reliable flashlight or torch is invaluable for navigating, signaling, and working after sunset.
Recommended Product: Flashlight
Why You Need It: When digital devices fail, a compass and map are your best navigation tools. Knowing how to use them can mean the difference between staying safe and getting lost.
Recommended Product: Survival Compass
Why You Need It: If you’re venturing far into the wild, an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) can send distress signals and help search-and-rescue teams find you fast.
Recommended Product: Personal Locator Beacon (EPIRB)
Why You Need It: A multi-band emergency radio lets you stay informed about weather conditions, news, and potential hazards. Many models also include a hand-crank for power, so you’re never left without a charge.
Recommended Product: Emergency Hand-Crank Radio
Why You Need It: Dehydrated food packs and energy bars are lightweight and calorie-dense, providing the nutrition you need without taking up too much space. Aim for at least 3,000 calories per day.
Recommended Product: Emergency Dehydrated Food
Why You Need It: A compact burner stove and fuel tablets make it easy to cook or boil water anywhere. Make sure to pack a fire starter as well for reliable ignition.
Recommended Product: Portable Survival Stove
Why You Need It: From cutting rope to opening cans, a multitool provides a range of functions in one compact device, which can be invaluable in the field.
Recommended Product: Multitool for Survival
Why You Need It: Accidents can happen anywhere, and a first aid kit is essential for treating injuries, cuts, and other medical emergencies in the field. Look for a kit with items like bandages, antiseptics, tweezers, and pain relievers.
Recommended Product: Comprehensive First Aid Kit
Don't forget CASH, and a good watch to trade!
Here’s how you can create an emergency water distillation system using plastic sheeting and sunlight. This method, known as solar still distillation, can produce drinkable water by evaporating and condensing moisture from soil, plants, or impure water sources. It’s a simple and effective survival trick that requires minimal supplies.
Plastic Sheet: Clear plastic works best as it allows sunlight to pass through.
Container: A cup or any small container to collect water.
Rock or Weight: To create a depression in the plastic sheet.
Digging Tool: To make a small pit (if available).
Source of Moisture: Soil, plants, or any other moisture-rich material you can find.
Dig a Hole: Dig a shallow pit in the ground, about 1-2 feet deep and wide enough to accommodate your plastic sheet.
Place the Container: Put the container in the center of the pit, which will catch the distilled water.
Fill the Pit with Moisture: You can add moist soil, green plants, or even dirty or salty water around the container to provide a source of moisture. Avoid putting it directly into the container.
Cover with Plastic: Spread the plastic sheet over the pit, ensuring it’s tight and sealed around the edges by weighing down the corners with rocks or soil.
Place a Rock in the Center: Put a small rock or weight in the middle of the plastic, directly above the container. This will create a low point, causing condensed water to drip into the container.
The sunlight heats up the pit, evaporating moisture from the soil, plants, or water sources beneath the plastic.
As the moisture evaporates, it condenses on the underside of the plastic sheet. The depression in the plastic, created by the rock, directs the water droplets to drip into the container.
After several hours (usually best left for a full day in the sun), you’ll find collected distilled water in the container. This water is purified by evaporation and condensation, making it safe to drink.
Choose a sunny location for maximum water production.
Using green vegetation as a moisture source can increase water yield.
Avoid contaminating the container or touching the condensed water with impure objects.
This technique can be a lifesaver in emergencies by providing clean, drinkable water when traditional sources are unavailable!
Building a reliable grab bag is about planning for the unexpected. Each item plays a role in keeping you safe, comfortable, and prepared.
